Do you need to Visit the UK for business purposes?

If you wish to come to the UK for business you will first need to obtain a UK Business Visitor Visa, which is now part of the Standard Visit Visa route. There are many circumstances that would require a Business Visitor Visa application. A UK Business Visitor Visa is Suitable if:

  • You're attending a meeting or conference in the UK.

  • You need to sign contracts in the UK.

  • You want to take part in a specific sports-related event.

  • Conduct a site visit in the UK.

  • Delivering goods in the UK.

  • Work in the tourism industry as a translator or tour operator in the UK.

  • People who work in IT or company infrastructure in the UK.

  • If you are an academic visitor to the UK. You’re an academic and are doing research or accompanying students on a study abroad programme.

  • Film crews or religious groups equally apply under this visa.

  • You’re an artist, entertainer or musician and coming to the UK to perform.

  • You’re a doctor or dentist and are coming to the UK to take a clinical attachment or observer post.

  • You want to take the Professional and Linguistic Assessment Board (PLAB) test or sit the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). 

  • You want to get funding to start, take over, join or run a business in the UK.

UK Business Visitor – Permitted Activities

  • Attending meetings, including interviews that have been arranged before coming to the United Kingdom, or conferences.

  • Arrange deals or negotiate or sign trade agreements or contracts and carrying out fact-finding missions.

  • Conducting site visits and inspections.

  • Speaking at a one-off conference where this is not run as a commercial concern and is not making a profit for the organiser.

  • Employees of foreign manufacturers or suppliers installing, dismantling, repairing, servicing, or advising on equipment, computer software or hardware where there is a contract of purchase, supply, or lease.

  • Employees of overseas companies or organisations receiving training in specific work practices or techniques which are required for their employment overseas and this training is not available in their home country (this could be receiving training in a research or analysis technique as long as they were not carrying out research during the visit)

  • Those acting as interpreter or translator for visiting business persons provided the interpreter/translator is employed by the overseas company and is coming solely to provide this service for the visiting company member.

  • Board-level Directors attending board meetings in the UK provided they are not employed by a UK company, although they may receive a fee for attending the meeting.

What are the criteria for a UK Business Visitor Visa?

  • One condition with a Business Visitor Visa is that the applicant's salary should come from overseas and they cannot receive any pay from the UK Business they visit

  • You must plan to visit the UK for a maximum of 6 months and leave at the end of that period.

  • You will need to show that you have enough money to support your stay in the UK without recourse to public funds

  • You must visit the UK with no intention to study and you will need to show that you do not intend to charge members of the public for services provided or goods received

Requirements

You will need to demonstrate that you only intend to visit the UK for a short period – no more than 6 months. You must demonstrate that you intend to visit the UK for a genuine business activity.

You must intend to leave the UK after the end of your visit and demonstrate that you can meet the cost of the return or onward journey. You must show that you have sufficient funds to maintain and accommodate yourself (and any dependants) without working in the UK or receiving assistance from UK public funds. Alternatively, you can show that your relatives or friends or the company will be financially supporting and/or accommodating you.

Activities not permitted on a business visitor visa:

  1. You must not intend to study in the UK.

  2. You must not intend to charge the public for services provided or goods received.

  3. You must be based abroad and have no intention of setting up a base in the UK.

  4. You must receive your salary/remuneration from overseas.

  5. You must not intend to marry or register a civil partnership in the UK.

  6. You must not intend to receive private medical treatment during your visit to the UK.

  7. You must not be a transit passenger to a country outside the Common Travel Area.
